According to the UEFA press service, this decision was made by the executive committee of the organization in order to reduce the burden on football players amid the tightening of the national teams' calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is noted that this rule will apply to the matches of the League of Nations, the qualification of the women's Euro, the Champions League, the Europa League, the women's Champions League and the play-off matches of the European qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

It is also reported that the allowed number of players in the match application will be increased to 23.

Earlier it was reported that UEFA plans to hold the European qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup from March to November 2021.
