Last year's Allsvenskan winner Djurgården got the chance to participate in this year's Champions League qualifier.

When they left there, they joined league runners-up Malmö, league trio Hammarby and cup winner IFK Gothenburg in the ongoing second qualifying round of the Europa League.

Four Swedish teams thus had the opportunity to reach Europe's second largest club team tournament and three can still do so.

Next season, only the Allsvenskan champion can reach the Champions League or Europa League.

The other three are missed for the new "third tournament" Europa Conference League.

The Allsvenskan second and third as well as the cup winner enter the second qualifying round of the new tournament, while the Allsvenskan champion enters the CL qualifier's first round.

If the champion leaves, there are lifelines to get into the Europa League or the new Conference League.

What is the reason for the change?

The European Football Association has made the Europa League much more similar to the Champions League.

It will be a tournament that is even clearer for the big football countries.

Only the top 15 nations have clubs in the Europa League 2021-2022 if you ignore champions who take the shortcut from the CL qualifiers.

Instead, the Europa Conference League has been created with the motivation that more club teams get the chance to play in Europe.

If Sweden wants to get more teams in the more prestigious tournaments, then you have to advance in the national ranking where you are currently 21st.

This is done through success in the European game.

What is the problem?

Three of four Swedish teams will thus enter the second qualifying round of the Europa Conference League from next year.

It is negative from two aspects.

First, Swedish teams have less chance of being pitted against so-called big teams.

The biggest teams on paper that are certainly in the Conference League are, for example, the winner of the English League Cup and the Spanish League Six.

They also enter two qualifying rounds according to the Swedish teams.

In the round where the Swedish team enters, you can, for example, meet the league three from Azerbaijan.

The other negative is that the European game in the future will give Swedish football less income.

The prize money in the Europa Conference League will be considerably less than in the Europa League.

Exactly how much smaller is not decided yet, but it will make it more difficult for Sweden to compete with the bigger leagues in the future.

- If the competition is to be perceived as meaningful, it requires a proper financial investment.

Because it is doubtful whether the match arrangement will generate so much because it is completely unknown teams you are up against, says Lars-Christer Olsson, chairman of Swedish elite football, to TT.

In this year's qualifying game alone, which is not over, the Swedish clubs have recorded just over two million euros.

That amount will be smaller from next season.
