It was enough with a preliminary shared 31st place for Linnea Ström, two strokes below par after a final 73-round, to be the best of the Swedish players in this year's second major in the heat on the Mission Hills course in California.

Double boogey for Sagström

Anna Nordqvist tentatively shared 42nd place, Madelene Sagström plummeted to a shared 56th with a final double bogey and Pernilla Lindberg had to fight not to be the worst of the 76 players who passed the qualifying limit.

This prolongs a gloomy suite.

It was different a few years ago.

Anna Nordqvist ended the major year 2017 by winning the Evian Championship and Pernilla Lindberg started 2018 by winning ANA Inspiration.

Two straight Swedish victories were of course sensational - but since then the successes have not been entirely in the major context.

Boring suite

Although Dani Holmqvist led the British Open halfway through August, he fell back and finished only 29th.

This week, Madelene Sagström was second after a round, but then lost ground day by day.

When Nelly Korda, USA, and Brooke Henderson, Canada, shared the lead of 15 under par with seven holes left, all Swedes had already competed.

In fact, no Swede - despite eleven attempts - has been in the top 10 in a major since Lindberg won almost two and a half years ago.

The next chance to break that suite comes in the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania, October 8-11.
