It was in the swinging and VAR-filled first half that Barcelona were able to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Lionel Messi was, as usual, involved in much of the Catalans' offensive and was also a big part of the evening's 3-1 victory.

Napoli started best

The guests from Naples started best at Camp Nou and Dries Mertens had a ball in the post early. But Barcelona would take the lead on the corner. Despite a suspected illegal push in the penalty area, Clement Lenglet was approved a goal.

Then Lionel Messi stepped into the action. The Argentine was able to extend his lead after trampling through a passive Napoli defense. After he seemed to have lost the ball both once and twice, Barca's number ten got off a very nice left end next to the far post.

After Barcelona had a beautiful goal ruled out after a highly dubious hand decision after a VAR check, the Catalans would receive a penalty after a strange situation where Messi stole the ball from Kalidou Koulibaly. The Napoli defender never seemed to see Messi and went for a powerful clearance. But instead of hitting the ball, the Senegalese hit the Barcelona player's foot and after a long VAR check, the Turkish referee finally awarded a penalty. From eleven meters, Luis Suarez was then ruthless and put it 3-0.

Bayern are waiting in the quarter

An unusually eventful first half ended with another job, this time to the Italian visitors. Lorenzo Insigne gave the Neapolitans a bit of hope with their 3-1 before the final half of the double meeting.

Once there, it was Napoli who frantically chased two goals against an often compact Barca defense. The Italians never came closer than a conceded goal from the Pole Arek Milik and Barca were able to secure promotion with a total of 4-2 in a double meeting. Once there, tonight's second winner awaits - Bayern Munich.
