The German football club Werder Bremen has begun exploring the possibility of adding the so-called crisis item in the contracts of its new players, which requires players to waive a percentage of salaries in the event of an unexpected crisis such as the pandemic of the emerging Corona Virus (Covid-19).

Frank Bowman, Managing Director of Werder Bremen, said in statements published by the newspaper, "Visser Courier" today, Wednesday, that the club's legal department is working on the issue of adding the item, which stipulates reducing 20% of the players' salaries for a specific period of time in case of crises.

Bowman added: "There are efforts to add such a provision in order to mitigate financial risks in the event of an unexpected event. I assume that we will include this item in the contracts of all players."

Bremen benefited from a government loan after the Corona crisis, and the working hours of some of the club's employees have been reduced, and the players have waived a portion of their salaries, which has not been disclosed.

Bowman said he expects a recommendation from the German Bundesliga, because it is related to the financial aspects between clubs and players.

When asked what would happen in the event Bremen wanted to include a certain player, while the player was not ready to sign a contract that included this clause, Bowman said that there would be some flexibility with regard to the proportion of the salary deduction.

Bowman said: "A player's salary will be reduced by 10%, while another player will be reduced by 20%. We'll see what happens."
