Sloane Stephens, who won the US Open in 2017, defeated reigning Olympic champion Monica Puig when the World Team Tennis (WTT) tournament began on Sunday at Greenbier in West Virginia, USA. In the tournament, each match is decided after a set that is played first to 5 and Stephens won with the final numbers 5-1.

The tournament is one of the few sporting events that could be conducted with crowds during the corona crisis. Five hundred fans sat at a distance from each other with face protection. The event also included corona testing for all who attended and players rubbed elbows instead of shaking hands after the matches.

In the tournament, all players compete in teams and each team represents an American city. Sloane Stephens competes for Chicago Smash who now leads 24-18 over Puigs, The Vegas Rollers.
