The Belgian rider Niels de Vriendt died Saturday at age 20 during a close race in Wortegem-Petegem (Belgium), the first in the country after the pandemic caused by the coronavirus.
The VDM-Trawobo team rider lost consciousness after 13 kilometers of the race had been covered. Emergency services quickly transferred De Vriendt to the Oudenaarde hospital, where they were unable to save the cyclist's life, the Belgian Cycling Federation confirmed.
The race was suspended by the organizers and the Belgian Cycling Federation regretted the loss through its official Twitter account: "Another tragic loss today of a young rider. We want to express our sincere condolences to Niels' family, friends and colleagues. from Vriendt. "
