Former player and coach Juan Carlos Unzué will announce this Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Camp Nou that he suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative muscular disease that currently has no cure. According to 'Marca', he will do so through a statement in which he will send a message of hope despite the ailment.

At 53, Unzué began his career as a goalkeeper in 1986 at Osasuna, the club in which he formed, and in 1988 he signed for Barcelona, where he was the regular substitute for Andoni Zubizarreta until 1990. There he held a Recopa and a Copa del Rey. . He then signed at Sevilla, where he already settled and played a total of 222 games in the First Division, before going through Tenerife and Oviedo and returning to Osasuna to retire in 2003.

It was then when he began his career as a coach, first as a goalkeeper coach in the coaches of Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola and then as a coach for several teams. In 2010 he debuted at Numancia, then he was at Racing and finally began working as Luis Enrique's second in both Celta and Barcelona, where he won the treble. Then he would return to Celta, as the first coach and his last job, last year, was at Girona.
