Former Spain goalkeeper and world champion Iker Casillas in 2010 abandoned the idea of his candidacy for the presidency of the Spanish Federation for the game because of the situation generated by the epidemic of the Corona virus emerging in his country.
Casillas, 39, posted a message on his social media accounts saying, "I would like to announce that I have decided not to run in the upcoming elections to be held in the union."
The 2010 world champion justified his withdrawal because of the "exceptional social, economic and health situation in our country, which means that the elections come second."
"In sports and federations, we need to focus on how we can help players, clubs and competitions. And the elections will only force us to focus our efforts on something that is not necessary today," Casillas added.
The announcement of the former Real Madrid goalkeeper (1999-2015), and the current Portuguese club Porto, opens the way for current federation president Luis Rubiales to be re-elected in the elections scheduled for August 17.
Rubiales announced Wednesday that the elections will be held on August 17, and if the Spanish Supreme Sports Council (equivalent to the Ministry of Sports) does not allow it to be held on the specified date, the voting will take place on September 17, knowing that these elections were originally scheduled in the second half of 2020.
Casillas suffered a heart attack in May 2019, but it has not been officially announced whether he will suspend his gloves or not, knowing that he has not participated in any official matches since then.
