In 2016, American footballer Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the US national anthem as a symbol that he did not want to stand up for a country that, according to him, oppresses blacks. It was a gesture that then spread in the sports realm.

Similar support has been shown since 46-year-old George Floyd died in connection with a brutal police intervention in Minneapolis, USA and now Thuram chose to kneel after his target.

Marcus's father, the great player Lilian Thuram, has been active in human rights issues.

The squat was also not Thuram's only gesture in the match. After the final signal, he paid tribute to his teammate Mamadou Doucoure, who after injury problems made his first minutes in several years, by taking his jersey and putting it on a corner flag that he walked around with.
