Shad Gaspard, a former star of the WWE wrestling shows organization, was found dead Wednesday at Venice Beach in Los Angeles, where he had disappeared last weekend, authorities said.

Beach lifeguards had told police that 39-year-old Gaspard was swept up on Sunday by a strong current, although they were able to rescue their 10-year-old son from the water .

"When he was last seen by rescuers, a wave had crashed into Mr. Shad Gaspard and he was washed out to sea," police said in a statement Monday.

The search for the former WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) figure by first responders and divers was unsuccessful, and the Los Angeles Police Department included him on the missing persons list on Tuesday.

His body was recovered early Wednesday morning near a beach pier and was identified by the coroner's office.

Gaspard, who earned WWE recognition as part of the Cryme Time duo , retired in 2010. He subsequently had small roles in television and film, including the comedy "Get Hard" (2015), starring Kevin Hart and Will. Ferrell.

Many colleagues of Gaspard in wrestling regretted his death through social networks.

"My prayers and hope for Shad Gaspard's wife, son and family during this unimaginable moment. This is difficult, very difficult. A great guy," former wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson , known as "The Rock," wrote on Twitter .
