The French Football Federation has decided to award the title of champion of France 2019-2020 to the women's team of Lyon although the season has not ended, AFP learned Monday from concordant sources, confirming an information from RMC Sport.

Solicited, the federation refused to comment on Monday evening after an executive committee which was to rule on this point. The information was however confirmed by a source close to the deliberations and by a source close to the Lyon club.

Untouchable since 2007

This decision, which should be formalized soon, would offer a fourteenth consecutive Division 1 title to the Lyonnaises, untouchable on the national scene since 2007.

The French women's championship was stopped in mid-March because of the spread of the new coronavirus at the time when Lyon, leader of the classification, was preparing to face Paris SG, second with three points behind six days before the end. PSG should therefore be qualified for the next edition of the Champions League, like OL.

At the bottom of the table, Marseille (11th with 6 pts) and Metz (12th with 2 pts), largely unhooked in the ranking, are in relegation position.

The Coupe de France and the Champions League pending

If the championship is officially stopped, the season may not yet be completely over for Lyon and PSG, since the two clubs are still involved in the Coupe de France and the Champions League.

Before the competition was interrupted, OL had to face Guingamp in the Cup semi-final as well as Bayern Munich in the C1 quarter-final first leg. As for Paris, its respective adversaries are Bordeaux and Arsenal. The meetings could be held this summer if the FFF and UEFA, organizers of the two competitions, decide to maintain them.
