Will the Stade Rennais Eduardo Camavinga nugget stay at the club with European qualification? - JF Monier / AFP

  • The coronavirus epidemic allows Red and Black supporters to access the Champions League.
  • But it will probably go through two preliminary rounds before dreaming of a possible group stage.
  • Anyway, this unexpected news looks like a dream finally come true.

It would have taken a global epidemic to stop the French football championship for Stade Rennais to finally reach the Champions League. Stronger than a Fauvergue goal at the 92nd one evening in May 2007, the coronavirus epidemic has just allowed Red and Black supporters to access their dearest dream. Qualify for the most prestigious club competition. If it will probably go through two preliminary rounds before dreaming of a possible group stage, the news has nevertheless delighted the Breton twittosphere, which was unleashed at the official announcement of the LFP. Here is what could change in the life of the Breton club. And what should stay.

The dream finally realized

When he became interested in the supporters of Stade Rennais, director Antoine Biard wondered. Why did men and women continue to support a club that had the annoying tendency to miss when everyone was waiting for it? In his documentary, however, he had the chance to film the most beautiful European campaign in the history of the club. Then the release of a whole people, when Benjamin André raised the Coupe de France one evening in April 2019.

A year later, this same red and black people will dream bigger and should finally join the Champions League. Almost 13 years after the now famous goal of Fauvergue at the last second of a match etched in the memory of the most faithful.

Will Camavinga stay?

It is announced at Real Madrid for a little fifty million potatoes. Can we imagine that the Eduardo Camavinga nugget from Rennes could stay in Brittany this summer? Not impossible. Listening to Julien Stéphan, the Breton coach is keen to keep his midfielder to offer him an additional year in Ligue 1. We imagine that the prospect of playing the first Champions League campaign in the history of his training club could keep the kid.

🔴⚫ The opportunity also to thank the Loire Brigade - which after having deprived us of the Champion's League in 2007 by invading the Beaujoire field - contributed to this 2020 qualification by extending additional time at Roazhon Park on January 31 during SRFC -FCN (3-2) https://t.co/0RFa35DV7i

Will the shareholder let go?

Stade Rennais is not the most buzzing club in Ligue 1. But it has one of the strongest shareholders. Invested since 1988 in the club of his native region, François Pinault is one of the largest fortunes in the world. It is thanks to its investments that the club has been able to attract some big names in football in recent years, like Hatem Ben Arfa or world champion Steven Nzonzi. Fans have long dreamed of seeing the Pinault family take out the check book to buy some cracks. The arrival of the Brazilian Raphinha for 20 million euros last summer having almost erased the trauma Severino Lucas, we can think that the transfer window could be animated on the Rennes side. The announced arrival of Florian Maurice as sports director could accelerate the transformation.

Why loser status could remain

Imagine going through preliminary rounds. Imagine a pitiful elimination against a modest Hungarian team that no one has heard of. Imagine empty stadiums and an aborted campaign in a partially confined summer. And say goodbye to your dream of seeing Barça, Real, Juve or Bayern tread the lawn of Roazhon Park. Can we then say that Stade Rennais will have played the Champions League?
