Future holder of TV rights for Ligue 1 from next season, the Mediapro group would even be ready to retransmit the end of the season if it were withdrawn from its current broadcasters Canal + and beIN, which have suspended their payments. This was stated by its CEO, Jaume Roures, in an interview given to L'Equipe on Thursday.

“If there was contractual good faith, they would have paid the part corresponding to the matches broadcast. It is necessary to help the League and the clubs in this situation, one cannot take advantage of it to put them in a worse pass ”, launches the boss of the Sino-Spanish group. "We are moreover willing to take the place of Canal + and beIN if things do not get better", ie "to broadcast the end of the 2019-2020 season, even if it is played in June or July", says Jaume Roures.

Mediapro has "the means" to keep its commitments

After the interruption of French competitions due to coronavirus, the current Ligue 1 broadcasters, Canal + and beIN, have indeed suspended their payments of TV rights, depriving French football clubs of an essential part of their income. Four club presidents have been appointed to negotiate with Canal +, including PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, also boss of beIN. A double hat that Jaume Roures "cannot understand".

The president of Mediapro assures that his group has "the means" to keep its commitments with the League, even if there are uncertainties about the start of the 2020/2021 season. “We are talking to the League. They want to start the season in late August or early September. If these deadlines are met, we will pay the money that we had to pay in August, ”underlines Jaume Roures. Mediapro maintains the launch of a 25 euro subscription for French football at the start of next season, with the aim of recruiting 3.5 million subscribers "at the end of the first season or at the start of the second".
