On Thursday, the message came from Belgium that they wanted to end the league game and that series leader Club Bruges would thus become champion.

However, such a decision could have consequences for the Belgian club.

In the regular cases, the league champion in the country is rewarded with a direct place for the Champions League group play - but the decision to break the league and allow the current table to be final, Uefa does not taste.

"Decided on the plan"

Such action should only be taken when it is assessed that there is no space in the calendar to end the season. If it is considered that this is not the case in Belgium, Club Bruges can be excluded from the Champions League next season.

Uefa, together with the European clubs interest association ECA and European League's interest organization representing the European leagues, wrote in an open letter that they are working on the possibility of ending the league games in July or August.

“It is of the utmost importance that even disturbed events, caused by this epidemic, do not prevent our competitions from being decided on the pitch. This in accordance with the rules and that all sports titles are awarded based on results ”, is to read in the letter.

Belgian league questions

Furthermore, it is announced that there is a strong belief that football can be resumed in the coming months and that decisions that lead to the leagues being broken in this situation will not be justified.

"Uefa reserves the right to decide which clubs have the right to participate in Uefa's club team competitions 2020/2021," they write.

Uefa has now commissioned working groups to investigate the legal and financial consequences of the corona crisis and come up with a new match calendar. The hope is that this will be completed by mid-May.

According to AFP news agency, the Belgian league on Friday morning had "constructive discussions" with Uefa and "questioned any strategy that would force a league to continue in the current health crisis".
