The MSK Zilina football club was placed in receivership following the difficulties encountered after the stoppage of the championship in Slovakia due to the epidemic of coronavirus. The seven-time club champion of Slovakia, the last time in 2017, has dismissed 17 of its 51 players, who had not accepted the reduction in their salaries.

"The (judicial) liquidator has dismissed the players with the highest salaries and those whose contracts ended this summer or winter," the club said in a statement. "We separated from 17 players whose salaries weighed the most on the club's finances," confirmed MSK Zilina's legal representative, Rastislav Otruba, to the Slovak agency TASR.

To try to compensate for the financial losses due to the stoppage of matches, the club had initially proposed to its players to temporarily reduce their wages during the time that would last the epidemic of coronavirus. "The proposal was to cut our wages by 80%, which was a lot," said MSK Zilina goalkeeper Dominik Holec on his Facebook page on Monday, saying he was "ready to negotiate" a cut but not at this level.

Players "not aware" of the precarious situation of the club

“We received a proposal from the club and we did not agree. However, we wanted to reach an agreement. We were not aware that the club was going to declare itself in default of payment, explained one of the dismissed players, Miroslav Kacer, with the local daily SME.

“Our 2020 budget is based on the income we expected to obtain this summer during the transfer period. Today, this amount will probably be close to zero, "said the club, stressing that the salaries of its professional players represent its biggest costs today.
