The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the organizers of Tokyo 2020 have agreed that the next Olympic Games will begin on July 23 of next year, according to sources close to these organizations, advanced to the Japanese state chain NHK on Monday.

Both parties agreed on the new date in a telephone conversation in which the Central Government of Japan and the Tokyo Executive also participated, after last Tuesday it was decided to postpone the original date for the Tokyo Games (from July 24 to 9 August 2020) due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

In that phone conversation, according to NHK and other local media, IOC President Thomas Bach participated ; the president of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, Yoshiro Mori ; the governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike , and the minister for the Olympic Games, Seiko Hashimoto .

The organizers of Tokyo 2020 have called a press conference for this night that was not originally scheduled, in which they are expected to refer to the date of the next Olympic Games.

Until now, those responsible for the Games had said that after the postponement agreed on March 24, the great sporting event would begin before the end of the summer of 2021, but there were doubts about whether it would be in the summer or spring of Tokyo, taking into account the complications derived from the international sports calendar.
