On Saturday, the International Ice Hockey Association, IIHF, announced that the women's A-World Cup in Canadian Halifax will be canceled.

The authorities in the country do not recommend that the championship is played because of the corona virus. As a result, the B-World Cup, in which Sweden would have participated, was also postponed for one year.

Luleå's back star Ronja Savolainen, who enters the SM final against HV71 on Wednesday, is one of all players affected. She along with the Finnish team were looking for revenge from last year's sour final loss against the US on penalties.

- I was really disappointed and also quite angry because it is usually the highlight of the season. Now that you have not, it feels empty. I don't know what to do now. It will feel strange to start summer training earlier than normal. I think it was terribly boring, ”she tells SVT Sport.

Financial loss

The 22-year-old is a full-time hockey player when the Finnish national team players receive a state grant of almost SEK 100,000. But a missed World Cup means lost income. They are losing out on a possible medal bonus as well as a daily allowance, which now completely falls away.

- The first thing I thought about was hell now I have to work. You can't think that you always have to win, but after the World Cup we have received an extra money from the bonus that fits well in the pocket. You can manage quite a long way during a summer then. But now you have to work, says Savolainen and continues.

- When the finals series ends it will be a bit of a holiday, but then I have to look for a job to get the money you usually get together at the World Cup. It is sad in that way also that I cannot put full focus on training, but must find a job to get their finances together.

"Need to work all summer"

How much money is involved with bonuses?

- I don't know if we can talk about it, but it is quite a lot. It all depends on how things are going at the World Cup. For this championship it would raise the bonus so I don't know what it is on now. But that's pretty much money.

Is that how you manage over the summer?

- Yes, it is so that you can manage over the season as well. It is when it is over that you waste everything.

Have you worked anything in previous summers?

- Last summer I worked a month for fun to know what it's like to work and to get some extra money. But now I need to work all summer to get the economy together.
