Winning the downhill race in Kitzbühel for an Austrian is on the same emotional level as winning an Olympic gold. Before today's downhill race, home runner Matthias Mayer talked about the dream of reaching the podium in the classic hill.

"I've always tried, I've never succeeded," he told Nachrichten.

The dream came true on Saturday.

Mayer, who won the combination in Wengen last weekend, stood for a cannon in Kitzbühel and passed his compatriot Vincent Kriechmayer and Beat Feuz from Switzerland. They were both 22 hundredths of Mayer.

No rider then managed to make a better ride than Mayer.

Alexander Köll was the only Swede on the slopes. He finished in 36th place, he was 2.77 after the winner Mayer.
