Gauff went up to 40-0 and got three match balls. She put away a stop ball that Williams dug up after two bounces. Gauff thought the ball was in play and hit the net and when she heard the referee's voice she thought it was for her own miss and screamed in frustration.

Once it was up to Gauff that she won the match after all, she thanked Williams with restrained joy.

- It was a difficult match and I was so nervous about today's match. I was shocked when I saw the draw, but I'm glad I made it, says Gauff, who was astonished that the audience shouted her name:
