Humbert, 57th in the world, won the first title of his career, at 21 years old. He was not seeded, unlike his opponent (N.5). Pair, 30 and 24th in the world, had beaten Humbert in their only confrontation last year at Winston-Salem when he had led a set to zero and finally won 2-1.

- ATP Tour (@atptour) January 18, 2020This Saturday in New Zealand, the rising star gave up the second set again but took the best in the two tie-breaks, the first easily (7/2), the second at the end of the suspense (7/5). It must be said that Paire had been forced to play three sets in his previous four matches in the tournament, while Humbert eliminated his last three opponents before the final each time in two sets, including Denis Shapovalov (seeded N. 2) and John Isner (seeded N.4).
It was the first Franco-French final of the ATP circuit since that of Montpellier (France) in February 2019, won by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
