The Dutch rider Edwin Straver is in critical condition in a hospital in Riyadh after suffering a fall on this Thursday's stage of the Dakar Rally , the eleventh of this edition.

During the journey between Shubaytah and Haradh , Straver fell with his motorcycle sometime between the second and third waypoint, in a dune zone at about 50 kilometers per hour . The organization's assistance helicopter came immediately and as reported by medical services, they were performing resuscitation exercises for more than ten minutes . Already in the hospital, spokespersons for his family have confirmed that a cervical vertebra had ruptured.

Straver, 48 , participated for the third time in the Dakar , in which he was located in position number 38. The Dutchman disputed the Original by Motul mode, in which the participants run without equipment, assistance or companion.

After the death in an accident of Paulo Gonçalves last Sunday, the Dutchman had expressed that "if you do not accept the dangers of the race, you better stay at home."
