This week will be, like the rest of the year, prolific at dinners and meetings. Before the relatives arrive the labor. And as usual, the DGT starts an awareness campaign about the risk of alcohol and drug use while driving.

Traffic will conduct 25,000 tests a day from December 9 to 15 . It will intensify the focus on a risk factor causing one third of fatal accidents. According to the National Institute of Toxicology, 43% of those killed in a traffic accident in 2019 , who underwent autopsy, tested positive for alcohol, drugs and / or psychotropics. 25% of road deaths in Europe are related to alcohol.

The tests carried out by the Traffic Association of the Civil Guard will be joined by those carried out by the municipalities of more than 25,000 inhabitants in their urban centers. In the last campaign, 346 consistories participated, carrying out more than 50,000 alcohol and drug tests. "An increase in the number of controls with police officers leads to a reduction in the number of accidents involving victims," ​​defends the DGT. Last year 95,000 drivers tested positive for Traffic.

The Road Safety Law sets the maximum alcohol rates allowed for drivers, as well as the prohibition of driving in the presence of drugs. In this case it is an administrative infraction.

  • More than 0.50 mg / l: 1,000 euros and 6 points.
  • Reidents: 1,000 euros and 4 or 6 points, depending on the rate given.
  • Drugs:
  • 1,000 euros and 6 points

For its part, the Criminal Code typifies crimes against traffic safety and establishes the following penalties for driving with excess alcohol or under the influence of drugs.

  • Alcohol:
  • Rates above 0.60 mg / l in air: imprisonment for three to six months or a fine of six to twelve months or work for the benefit of the community for 30 to 90 days. Deprivation of the right to drive from one to four years.
  • Refusal to submit to the tests: imprisonment from six months to one year and deprivation of the right to drive from one to four years.
  • Drugs:
  • Driving under the influence of toxic drugs, narcotics or psychotropic substances: imprisonment for three to six months or a fine of six to twelve months or work for the benefit of the community for 30 to 90 days. Deprivation of the right to drive from one to four years.
  • Refusal to submit to the tests: imprisonment of six to one year and deprivation of the right to drive from one to four years.
