The decision, which can be appealed to the Sports Arbitration Court Cas, means that Russia will be suspended from all major championships for the next four years.

- I presume that the decision is made on the right grounds, so I can't say much about the decision itself, says SVT Sports expert Kajsa Bergqvist.

The McLaren report, published in 2015, showed how Russian doping had been ordered and made possible by the Russian government already during the 2012 Olympics.

- What is required, after all, is total transparency from Russia, which is the only way for them to restore their confidence. I think it is sad that despite this long process, Russia has obviously failed to show sufficient transparency.

- It is sad for sports that a big nation like Russia must not compete, but the responsibility lies with them themselves. They have a responsibility to be able to meet Wada's criteria and they have had the opportunity, so the responsibility lies with them.

However, Russian athletes who can prove that they are not included in the McLaren report, that they have not submitted positive doping tests and that their doping tests have not been manipulated, can however compete under the neutral flag.

- I still think it is good for Russian athletes who can demonstrate that they have completed their reporting in a proper way allowed to compete, even if it is under a neutral flag, says Bergqvist.
