Egypt's Zamalek announced the appointment of former French coach Patrice Carteron to replace Serbian Milutin Sredojevic (Micho), who lost his post after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the opening of his group stage in the African Champions League last Saturday.

Zamalek said Carteron will arrive in Cairo on Tuesday and will be supported by duo Sami El Shishiny, Amir Abdel Aziz and Greek Antonio Antonio.

Carteron (former Mazembe coach) led Al Ahli to the 2018 African Champions League final but lost to Esperance before depositing the Arab Cup from the final to lose his post.

The Frenchman took over from Morocco's Raja Casablanca in January and led them to win the African Super Cup at the expense of Esperance, but was sacked last month after a local defeat.

Carteron, 49, had previously led the Egyptian Tigris in 2016 before going to Saudi Arabia's Al-Nasr and playing in the MLS.

Zamalek did not announce before Carteron's appointment, but local reports said earlier that the Serbian coach had lost his job because of poor performance and defeat by Enppi in the league and then faltering against Mazembe.

Meizhou took over from Zamalek in August and led him quickly to win the Egyptian Cup, but this season began modestly and the relationship with the administration quickly strained before he lost his post.

Zamalek will play an easy match in the Egyptian Cup against Al Sharqiya on Wednesday, and Carteron is expected to watch it, before he hosts Angola's Primero Augusto in the Champions League next Saturday.

With the dismissal of Meizhou, Zamalek president Morteza Mansour has made 25 changes to the team's technical leadership during his 2014 presidency.

Mansour has hired 20 local and foreign coaches, has had to hire some of them more than once, and has chosen a number of them to lead the team on a temporary basis.
