Mike Babcock had ten successful years in Detroit leading to a Stanley Cup title in 2008. In 2015, the coach signed for the Toronto Maple Leafs and now four years later he has been fired. The dismissal occurred after a tough season start and after six straight losses, patience was over for Maple Leaf's sporting leadership.

The days that followed, social media has been full of harsh words against Babcock. Mike Commodore had Babcock as coach in Detroit in 2011 and writes:

“Your players abandoned you. They abandoned you because you are a terrible person. You are a mediocre trainer with an inflated ego ”

"I recognize the behavior"

Prior to SVT's NHL broadcast, Babcock's departure was discussed in the studio. Mikael Tellqvist, former NHL goalkeeper, thinks the coach type is not uncommon in the NHL.

- I recognize this behavior from when I was in the farmer's team with the coaches I had, I recognize the mental terror, says Tellqvist in SVT's broadcast.

Did you think there was such behavior from the coach in 2019?

- No, I didn't think so. I thought you were a lot more careful when hiring coaches and looking back at what they had for history and what kind of people they were. Given that there are a lot of younger people playing in the NHL now too, then you should have been more careful.

Bill Peters left after serious charges

According to SVT expert Mikael Renberg, it can be difficult to get rid of a coach with such a track record as Mike Babcock.

- It's hard, one like Babcock, he has won everything - such a coach everyone wants. Such things do weigh for or against.

Babcock is not the NHL coach who has been in windy weather in recent days. In Calgary, serious allegations of racism and violence have been directed against coach Bill Peters and today Peters also filed his dismissal application.

- It's a big club too. I think, can he ever come back to the NHL again after such a thing? It will be very difficult for him to come back after these accusations, comments Mikael Tellqvist.
