The discus, along with several other branches, has basically been erased from the Diamond League next season. This is because the TV broadcasts are shortened from 120 to 90 minutes.

Instead, the IAAF, or World Athletics as the federation now calls itself, offers the noble athletes to compete in the newly launched Continental Tour.

Daniel Ståhl has strongly criticized the Diamond League decision and met this weekend at the World Athletics Athletes Commission in Monaco to discuss the pending.

But in anticipation of change, the Swedish discus thrower is set to compete in the new series.

- I'll try it now, to compete and travel within the Continental Tour, confirms Daniel Ståhl to SVT Sport.

Ten competitions in ten countries

On Monday, World Athletics presented the conditions for the new competition series. The Continental Tour will focus on the branches that no longer have a place in the Diamond League, which in addition to the discus is 200 meters, 3000 meters of obstacles, three steps and sledgehammer.

The competitions will be held between May and September at ten different locations in everything from China to Finland (see fact box).

- It's a good idea actually, above all, finally the slaughter throwers can be included. They have been struggling with this issue for 15 years now after being kicked out of the Golden League (which later became the Diamond League). Now they are back on the map so it is great.

You still seem pretty positive?

- Well, of course, it is still positive that you have to compete somewhere. At the same time, the number one is still the Diamond League, that's what you want to be part of. It is the most important and greatest thing we have in athletics.

Daniel Ståhl will continue his efforts to reintroduce the branches of the Diamond League.

- It may not change the situation in 2020, but now we have a seat at the table anyway. So we can make sure that no similar decisions are made in the future without consulting athletes first.

How was the meeting this weekend?

- Good, I think. Renauld Lavenie (French pole vaulter) and Inaki Gomez (former Olympic athlete in progress) were there from the World Athletics Athletes Commission. We discussed good and bad things.

How do you proceed?

- On December 13, my friend Shaun Pickering (former bullet) will have the next meeting with Jon Ridgeon (CEO, World Athletics). So we have to take it further from there, says Daniel Ståhl.
