Leighton Accardo was diagnosed with cancer in May and has undergone treatments since then. In anticipation of continued treatment, she was invited to the club to sign a player contract and release the puck between the team captains to pay attention to the organization Hockey Fights Cancer. When it was time to release the puck, home team captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson left his club and allowed Leighton to take the draw against Calgary's team captain Mark Giordano.

Before the game, Leighton gave a peppery speech to the players and said they would work hard and have fun. Then she invited the team to pat her head so it would give them luck. Arizona forward Derek Stepan, who has a similar hairstyle, did as he was told and Leighton laughed well. She then got it right before Derek Stepan scored one of the goals when Arizona won the match 3-0.
