The American sport is in a state of 'shock' after the death of gymnast Melanie Coleman, only 20 years old. The young woman had an accident last Friday when she slipped while training on the asymmetric bars and severely damaged her spinal cord. She was admitted to the Yale-New Haven hospital and died 48 hours later.

"Her spirit, laughter and humor will always live with those who have loved her," was the message that accompanied the announcement of the death by her family, which will donate the gymnast's organs.

"She was not trying to get the best score. Being a great gymnast made her a better person. She wanted to help everyone around her," 10-year-old coach Tom Alberti told CNN.

"She was an incredibly arduous worker and a young woman with a sweet spirit. Our thoughts and prayers continue to address her family at this time. The SCSU Gymnastics team will miss her a lot, although she will always be with us," the team published where competed
