MADRID (Reuters) - Former Spanish club Al Wahda coach Legian Aguirre has been appointed as new coach of Leganes, months after his dismissal from the national team.

Aguirre, 60, will succeed Mauricio Pellegrino, who was sacked last October over poor results.

Leganes said in a statement today that he had reached an agreement with Aguirre "to take over the team until the end of the season", which will bring the Mexican coach back to the Spanish league where he previously supervised clubs including Atletico Madrid (2006-2009) and Espanyol (2012-2014).

Aguirre oversaw the leadership of the Pharaohs at the 2019 African Nations Cup, which he hosted at home in June and July, before being told against the backdrop of a surprise exit from the final round against South Africa (0-1).

Aguirre's new mission will be to try to get Leganes out of the relegation zone, and the team are currently 20th in La Liga, with just five points from 12 games (one win, two draws and nine defeats).
