In 2016, Norwegian cross-country skier Martin Johnsrud Sundby went on a two-month suspension, for having used an asthma medicine, even though he did not have an exemption.

Then followed a debate where it was discussed whether the use of asthma medicine improves athletes' performance, as Norwegian top riders such as Sundby, Marit Björgen and Maiken Caspersen Falla, and Swedes like Johan Olsson and Marcus Hellner all suffer from asthma.

24 volunteer athletes

In addition, statistics show that asthma-diagnosed individual athletes have performed surprisingly well in connection with the Olympics.

To find out the effects of asthma medicine, 24 volunteer athletes will now take part in a study led by a research team at the University of German Ulm.

The result will then be presented at the end of 2020.
