People between the ages of 21 and 71 took part in the world's coldest marathon, held in the Russian city of Oyimuku, the world's coldest inhabited area, with the city's temperature dropping to minus 72 degrees Celsius.

None of the contestants - who turned into snowmen and frozen their faces - could complete the maximum marathon run on the fifth of this month. The distances in the marathon varied between five, twenty-three and forty-four kilometers.

The video and pictures, published in the Siberia Times, show that when the marathon started, the temperature was 52 degrees below zero, and during the race it fell to minus 48 degrees.

The 71-year-old marathoner was 15 kilometers in two and a half hours, while the youngest of the 21-year-olds was 11 kilometers in one hour and eight minutes.

While the mayor of one of the towns in the area cut about 39 kilometers in three hours and 53 minutes to be the longest distance reached by a rider who participated in the marathon.

Organizers hope to see the world's "coldest marathon runners" of foreign nationalities, because all the contestants were Russians who were bold enough to face this harsh climate.
