Romanian referee Oviedo Hattigan continued to manage the match for Germany and his Dutch counterpart in the UEFA Champions League despite receiving news of his mother's death.

The Romanian referee learned of the death of his mother between the two halves of the game, but refused to leave, preferring to complete the game despite this bad news.

The Romanian football federation confirmed Tuesday the death of Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa and the German Football Federation (DFB) helped Hattigan travel to his country as soon as possible.

Dutch defender and Dutch defender Virgil Van Dyke has consoled the referee.

"I wished him the strength, and I told him that he managed the game well," Van Dyck was quoted as saying.
