The way Red Bull Racing dealt with the crash between Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen last year was one of the reasons for the Australian to leave the team. Tuesday was Ricciardo present at the presentation of the car of his new Renault team.

"There were a lot of small pieces that formed a puzzle together and the crash in Baku with Verstappen was one of those pieces," Ricciardo told Motorsport . At the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan both Red Bull drivers fell out after Ricciardo hit the back of the Dutchman.

After the race, the Red Bull team said that both drivers were equally guilty of the crash. That was not good for Ricciardo.

"We were both strongly speaking, to put it neatly, but I myself felt that I was not really wrong, even though I was the one who crashed behind, I think most have seen that there was a double movement", Ricciardo to the defensive action by Verstappen, who deviated twice from his line.

Ricciardo lacked internal support

The 29-year old driver missed internal support within Red Bull. "I understand why we had to deal with the media in a certain way: we represent a big brand, it does not help if we openly argue."

"But I had the feeling that internally we thought both sides were equally guilty, which in my opinion was not the case, but maybe that is also my stubbornness as a driver", the seven-time Grand Prix winner, who emphasizes that his understanding with Verstappen has always been good.

That Ricciardo chose an offer from Renault after five years at Red Bull aroused surprise. The French team finished last year at a great distance from top teams Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull as fourth in the World Cup stand for manufacturers.

Ricciardo expects no miracles at Renault

Ricciardo said at the unveiling of the RS19 from Renault that he does not expect any miracles from his new team in the first year. "It would be ideal if we could close the gap with the top teams, but I think it will be a very successful year if we can get closer."

He assumes that Renault will not pose a threat to the top teams at the beginning of the season. "I am realistic and knew when I signed here that the first race in Australia will drive Red Bull for me."

"I will not be embittered if they beat us in Melbourne, I am now working on another adventure, but I will not settle for fourth place forever."

Ricciardo will drive for the first time in the RS19 next week during the test days at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. The first race in Australia is on March 17.
