In 2019, the young driver joined the Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy, with which his father, Michael Schumacher, won five of his seven world titles in F1.

Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, will drive the 2019 Ferrari in Bahrain's private test on April 2 and will continue the next day at the wheel of the Alfa Romeo, said Tuesday the two teams. "I'm more than happy," said the young German driver in a statement, describing the tests as "great experience".

The young man, who turned 20 on March 22, will have made his Formula 2 debut, the antechamber of F1, the previous weekend in Bahrain as well. He is a member since this year of the Ferrari Driver Academy, the channel of young drivers of the Scuderia who also drives Alfa Romeo Racing (formerly Sauber).

A famous name

Mick Schumacher had already driven an F1 in 2017, an old car of his father. One of Ferrari's two official drivers for this season, his German compatriot Sebastian Vettel, will perform the second day of testing.

Schumacher's name is closely associated with that of Ferrari because his father won five of his seven world titles in F1 with Scuderia (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004). He was a victim of a ski accident after he retired from racing in 2013 and has not been seen in public since due to significant brain damage.

A new generation

Ferrari also announced that Britain's Callum Ilott, 20, who is also competing in the F2 Championship this year, will perform similar tests for Alfa Romeo at other tests on the Barcelona circuit on May 14-15.

"We are very happy to be able to give Mick and Callum the opportunity to drive an F1", said the boss of the Ferrari team Mattia Binotto. "They are pilots on an upward slope" and "the tests in Bahrain and Barcelona can be very useful at this stage of their career," he said.
