Coach Marcel Keizer and Sporting CP were eliminated on Thursday in the sixteenth finals of the Europa League. A 1-1 draw at Villarreal made the Portuguese fatal. The cloth also fell for the Dutch at Club Brugge.

Sporting, with Bas Dots in the striker, lost last week in home with 0-1 and had something to do in Villarreal. Initially it looked good, because on the stroke of rest, captain Bruno Fernandes scored.

The teams headed for an extension, but in the final phase, Pablo Fornals scored the verdict with the equalizer. Sporting was already less on the field with a man, as Jefferson Nascimento had his second yellow card five minutes after the break.

In his first season, Keizer seems to grab a prize at Sporting, because in the league, the gap at league-leader FC Porto is nine points. In the Portuguese Cup, the club is also on the brink of elimination.

The European adventure is also over for Club Brugge. Basic players Stefano Denswil, Ruud Vormer and Soufyan Amrabat experienced a painful night, as Red Bull Salzburg was too strong by 4-0. Bruges had won 2-1 at home.

Invallers Willems and De Guzman through with Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt is still in the Europa League. With Jetro Willems and Jonathan de Guzman as substitute, Shakhtar Donetsk was beaten 4-1. The duel had finished in 2-2 last week.

The match in Frankfurt was more exciting than the result suggests, because Shakhtar came back to 2-1 after rest and got chances for more. Frankfurt staggered, but still ran out in the final phase. Former FC Utrecht striker Sébastien Haller scored twice.

Arsenal easily came under the last sixteen. 'The Gunners' had lost 1-0 at BATE Borisov, but set it straight at home. It was 3-0 by Zakhar Volkov's own goal and hits from defenders Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Napoli (2-0 against FC Zürich), Valencia (1-0 against Celtic), Zenit-Saint Petersburg (3-1 against Fenerbahçe) and Dinamo Zagreb (3-0 vs. Viktoria Plzen) qualified thanks to a victory in their own stadium for the eighth finals.

From 21.00 on, another seven returns will be played in the sixteenth finals of the Europa League.
