Canadian boxer Adonis Stevenson was hospitalized in "critical conditions" on Saturday night after losing his WBC light heavyweight title to Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk, his entourage said.

"Adonis is currently in a critical condition in intensive care in the hospital, following his fight against Oleksander Gvozdyk," tweeted his manager Yvon Michel.

The CHU of Quebec has confirmed to AFP that the Canadian boxer of Haitian origin "was admitted to the emergency room" of the hospital, without further details.

"This is very disturbing"

"I talked to the people at the hospital. He was confused when he arrived. We fear a concussion. That's very disturbing, " said his manager at the post-game press conference that Stevenson did not attend.

Stevenson, who has not ventured out of Canada for more than seven years, came back for the tenth time Saturday night's title win over American Chad Dawson.

He was dominated almost from start to finish by Gvozdyk, and their duel was stopped by the referee on the 11th of 12 occasions.

The Ukrainian, London 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, made the difference thanks to a series of shots that stuck Stevenson in the ropes and sent him to the mat before the referee's intervention.

Stevenson's manager said "there will be no other comment for now," noting that the family and coaching of the Canadian boxer are at his bedside.
