It is noted that the athlete Pankin was not only the bronze medalist of the Olympic Games in the 100m breaststroke distance, but also the bronze medalist of the 1975 World Championships in Cali - in the 200m breaststroke, and the double European champion in 1970 and 1974 in the 100m breaststroke.

Pankin was also a 16-time USSR record holder (1969–1975) and a 12-time champion of the Soviet Union at breaststroke distances and combined relay races.
