Miyazaki Shiiba Village 4 Unidentified Site Sediment crosses the river and reaches the opposite bank September 8 19:51

A landslide disaster expert from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism conducted a field survey at a site in Shiiba Village, Miyazaki Prefecture, where houses were washed away by heavy rain caused by Typhoon No. 10.

At the site, the sediment that had flowed down the slope crossed a river about 30 meters wide and reached the opposite bank, and experts analyze that "it may indicate that the speed of the sediment was quite fast."

The survey was conducted by Takao Yamakoshi, Director of Sabo Laboratory, National Institute of Land and Infrastructure Management, and two experts in sediment-related disasters. They investigated the condition of collapsed slopes and the thickness of accumulated sediment.

This time, the experts are paying attention to the fact that the sediment that washed away from the houses and other places still crosses the river with a width of about 30 meters and reaches the road on the opposite bank.

The river is about 10 meters higher on the other side of the river, but the sand and sand have overcame the revetment on the other side of the river, destroying the guardrail beside the road.

Regarding this situation, Mr. Yamagoshi said, ``It seems that the tree that collapsed with the earth's sand played a role like a surfboard, and the earth and sand crossed the river, but we have never seen a distance of 30 meters, which is an extremely rare case. I think it shows that the speed of the collapsed earth and sand was extremely high."

4 people stay in the evacuation advisory

Four officials of the missing construction company were caught in the sand, staying at the company's office and their adjoining home as evacuation advisories were issued.

In many cases, construction companies in the area are responsible for recovery work in the event of a disaster, and according to Shiiba, more than 10 years ago, the villages have also signed an agreement with a group of construction companies in the village to deal with disasters.

However, the agreement stipulates only prior patrols and emergency restoration work after the danger has passed, and does not require waiting at the office while the typhoon is approaching, evacuation advice etc. When they were issued, they were calling for immediate evacuation.

Mayor Shimita Shiiba, who visited the site on the 8th, said, "I was talking about meeting with the president on Friday and asking them for a follow-up response. I wondered if I would have been discussing what to do after the typhoon. It's a pity that it happened, and I hope that four people will be found as soon as possible."
