THE THEME OF THE DAY

Left two three four

The SPD is marching again, and that cheers cheerfully: At a board meeting on the weekend, the party declared a clear left-wing and thus finally has a goal that seems to be all along. The comrades are "as euphoric as last two years ago in the hype surrounding Martin Schulz," writes my colleague Christian Teevs.

Strengthened the party feels in its reorientation currently mainly by criticism from outside. Members of the Left were outraged by the statement by Andrea Nahles to say goodbye to Hartz IV. The SPD wants to conquer clearly left territory: The minimum wage should rise to twelve euros, a right to come home office, a new child protection also.

The demands are probably mainly tactical reasons: The SPD thus provoked a breach of the Grand Coalition, commented capital bureau chief Sebastian Fischer.

At the CDU one is meanwhile busy with completely different topics. On Monday, the party members met in Berlin to discuss the dispute over migration policy - and remained largely unsuccessful, commented my colleague Stefan Kuzmany.

THE NUMBER OF THE DAY

100

So many people died in the first half of 2018 from traffic accidents on Swiss roads - a drastic decline compared to previous years. Responsible for this is above all a lawyer - and no, he did not fight (only) for a speed limit.
