THE THEME OF THE DAY

Raids in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands: United against the mafia

Today, 6 o'clock in the morning. Hundreds of investigators in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Belgium search apartments, offices, restaurants. Targeting: Members of the 'Ndrangheta, probably the most powerful mafia organization in the world - with a leading role in the international cocaine trade. The accused are accused of gang drug trafficking, money laundering and membership of a foreign criminal organization.

In Germany alone, the investigators arrested 14 people and secured assets of five million euros and several cars. The Europe-wide action runs under a Joint Investigation Team, a transnational investigation unit from Germany, Italy and the Netherlands under the coordination of the European judicial authority Eurojust. Everything about the arrests.

See in this video how the raid in the Italian city of Palermo came to an end.

Also an ice cream café in the city center of Duisburg was the target of the large-scale operation

The European police agency Europol itself calls the operation a "significant blow to one of the most powerful Italian criminal networks worldwide". Read the analysis of our colleagues Andreas Ulrich and Jörg Diehl here.

When it comes to 'Ndrangheta, it's always about San Luca: a 5000-soul village in Calabria, Italy's poorest region. And germ cell of the 'Ndrangheta. The village became famous in 1973. At that time, members of a mafia gang held billionaire son John Paul Getty III. captured. They cut off one ear and sent it as a sign of life to the parents.
