The theme of the day: Israel chooses a new government

In the parliamentary elections in Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hopes for a fifth term. But his re-election is uncertain, as the biggest challenger for his right-wing Likud party is the list blue-white by former Chief of Staff Benny Gantz. The election result could result in a multitude of complicated opportunities for government building. Without the help of right-wing and orthodox splinter parties, Netanyahu will not be able to hold on to power, analyze my colleagues Dominik Peters and Christoph Sydow.

The security situation still determines the political debate in Israel: Recently, there were again rocket attacks from Gaza, for which the ruling Hamas is blamed. This suffers Netanyahu's self-staging as the only true defender of Israel. It helps, however, that there have been no major attacks for some time. However, the PM is coming under pressure from other sources: The Attorney General wants to prosecute Netanyahu for alleged corruption and unfaithfulness. An overview of the topics and candidates of choice can be found here.

Maybe late in the evening Moshe Feiglin will be able to celebrate a success. According to polls, his party Zehut - Hebrew for Identity - could conquer up to seven seats and co-decide Netanyahu's political future. The condition for this: legalization of cannabis. Find out more about the program of the ultranational politician here.

The first results are expected on Tuesday evening from 21 clock. My colleague Dominik Peters then adjourns the vote with a lightning analysis.
