One year after the establishment of a platform by the Paris town hall, the city has just revealed its first assessment after twelve months of monitoring rent controls in the capital. Conclusion, there are still many owners who do not respect the rules...

1,600 reports in just one year! After the establishment by Paris town hall on January 1, 2023 of a platform dedicated to rent control, the city has just unveiled its first assessment this Tuesday. And there is still a lot of work... In fact, over twelve months, more than 1,600 reports were collected on the capital's website and 490 formal notices were sent to the owners concerned. On average, overpayments represent an overpayment of around 3,500 euros.

Thus, from this report revealed by the Paris town hall, we learn that in 60% of reporting cases, the excess is proven. Another lesson, 82% of reports concern small apartments (49% for studios, 33% for two rooms). It is therefore the youngest and most precarious populations who primarily suffer from these prohibited rent overruns. Real estate agencies are also singled out, because more than half of the reports (55%) concern apartments managed by professionals... 

Paris is the first city to have applied rent control in 2019. Other municipalities then followed, such as Lille, Lyon, Villeurbanne, Bordeaux and certain intermunicipalities in the Ile-de-France region. Several towns in the Basque Country have also chosen to benefit from this rent control, such as Anglet, Bayonne and Biarritz. Implementation is planned for this year.
