Pakistan and Iran agree to de-escalation after exchange of deadly strikes

After two days of tensions following the attack carried out by Tehran against a target of an Iranian Sunni extremist group in Pakistan and the Pakistani retaliations, the two countries decided to de-escalate.

During a telephone conversation, the Iranian and Pakistani foreign ministers decided to ease tensions.

The ambassadors of the two countries will visit the respective capitals.

Tehran and Islamabad also decided to strengthen their cooperation to fight against terrorist groups.

The tone had risen between the two neighboring countries after the operation carried out by Tehran against a base of the Iranian extremist Sunni group Jaish ol Adl in Pakistani territory.

Missiles and drones were used against two targets.

In retaliation, Pakistan struck two targets in Iranian territory on Thursday, January 18, claiming that it had targeted two Pakistani Baloch separatist groups.

Several countries in the region, notably Turkey and Saudi Arabia, had called on Iran and Pakistan to de-escalate.

Despite the announcement of the end of the diplomatic crisis between the two countries, Iranian officials have affirmed that Tehran will not accept the presence of Iranian terrorist groups in Pakistan.
