What is cryptococcal meningitis? This is the illness suffered by Patricia Pérez's husband

Cryptococcosis is a yeast that is spread by inhalation and, although under normal circumstances there is no danger, if it passes through the mucous membranes it can settle in the lungs and brain. This has been the case for Luis, who started with severe headaches, stiff necks and vomiting. The doctors were clueless and tested him for tuberculosis, covid, AIDS or leukemia until they found out what really happened to him. It took a while to diagnose it because there aren't too many studies and research on this disease.

"My husband is much better now: he lost the vision in one eye, he has no frontal vision, he lost his sense of smell and hearing... She went through a very long hell," said the former presenter of Vuélveme loca, who since leaving the small screen specialized in nutrition.

In her appearance on Espejo Público, Patricia confessed that "I never thought I was going to lose it. I thought we'd end up in a little house on the beach in Galicia (...) I have a lot of trust in doctors. He lost his hearing, his taste, his smell, his sight. He had very dramatic moments in the hospital. Raved. I had hallucinations. I never treated him like a sick person. I treated him like my husband. I cleaned it. I fed him. I made his bed. Touch was the only thing I noticed." She took care of washing, feeding, dressing him and of course making him feel that he was not alone. He weighed 52 kilos, so he couldn't stand upright.

He is currently in the hands of speech therapists and is going to rehabilitation for his memory and eyes and, although the recovery is being long, little by little "he is already being him", admitted Patricia. Those closest to him have been at the foot of the barrel. Among them, Alaska (60), who is like family since together with Luis' brother, Nacho (66), he founded the group Fangoria. Luis and Patricia were married almost 17 years ago and have no children.
