The newly built new building of the laboratory animal center has a construction area of 13130,3 square meters, and the facility feeding area is divided into biological purification area, isolation and quarantine area, feeding area, transgenic mouse preservation area, etc., equipped with IVC cages, DVC intelligent cages and isolation bags, etc., to meet the feeding needs of 5,<> SPF large, mouse and sterile mice, and provide whole-process escrow services such as medicine, blood collection and material collection, cage mating, etc. In addition to meeting the needs of laboratory animal feeding, it also sets up a comprehensive animal experiment technology sub-platform, including phenotypic analysis platform, genetic engineering platform, animal model platform, etc., equipped with complete instrument equipment and professional technical team.

Xu Wangjie, deputy director of the Laboratory Animal Center, said that laboratory animals are different from ordinary animals, and are more complex and special than conventional scientific research objects, and they are life that exists for science.

"The food of the animals is strictly sterilized by irradiation, and we also clean and disinfect the cages and areas regularly." Wang Zhaoxia, director of the Laboratory Animal Center, told reporters that over the years, the breeding management team has always put the welfare of animals in the first place. The management requirements for a variety of experimental animals and different levels of breeding areas are different, but the center has always implemented effective measures to ensure the safety and stability of the breeding environment with the strictest and most standardized management system.

In 2013, the original facility of the Laboratory Animal Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University was officially put into operation and incorporated into the university-level platform management, becoming an indispensable part of the analysis and testing center. In 2016, the volume of the original facility of 3500,2023 cages was rapidly saturated, which was far from meeting the growing scientific research needs of the life sciences of the university, and the construction of the new building of the laboratory animal center was officially launched. In October 10, the new building will be put into trial operation in an orderly manner.

Over the past ten years, the Laboratory Animal Center has served 17 colleges and 12 affiliated hospitals of Shanghai Jiaotong University, including biology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering, and materials, helping to produce dozens of high-quality academic achievements, and providing high-level support for life science and biomedical research inside and outside the university. According to reports, recently, the technical team of the laboratory animal center is helping the research and development of pancreatic cancer drugs of well-known pharmaceutical companies, and promoting the research and development and clinical application of drugs through systematic and standardized animal experiments. Rat experiments are mainly used to understand the whole process from absorption to excretion of drugs after entering animals through the mouth, as well as the dosage range and toxicity of drugs, and to control the accurate drug concentration of treatment through animal models (mouse experiments) of pancreatic cancer. In addition, rabbit immunology experiments are also carried out to test the immunogenicity of the drug, that is, whether the animal will develop antibodies to the drug.
