Virginie Girod SEASON 2023 - 202405h00, October 31, 2023

Discover the rest of the story dedicated to Nina Simone, icon of soul music in the United States, told by historian Virginie Girod. Nina Simone met Andrew Stroud in the 50s. It was love at first sight between them and Andy became the artist's manager. Nina Simone's success is resounding. But little by little, her personal life is turned upside down: Andy is a violent man, and Nina suffers from bipolar disorder, diagnosed much later, which causes her to suffer on a daily basis. Angered by racism against the black community, Nina Simone threw herself wholeheartedly into the fight for civil rights. It supports radical movements, such as those led by the Black Panthers or Malcolm X. The artist is also committed through his songs, such as with Mississippi Goddam, which denounces the horrors of lynchings suffered by black Americans. This radicalism gradually isolated the artist, who went into exile in Liberia, Switzerland, and then Paris, before his career restarted in the 1990s.
