Due to cross-strait prevention and control measures for the new crown epidemic, a large number of Taiwan compatriots decided to stay on the mainland for the Spring Festival this year.

A reporter from China News Agency learned through interviews that the regret of not being able to reunite with relatives and friends in Taiwan, and the peace of mind and expectation of the Chinese New Year in the mainland are shared by many people.

According to Taiwan media reports, in the past, about 100,000 Taiwan compatriots working and studying in the mainland returned to Taiwan to celebrate the Spring Festival every year.

The Taiwan Straits Foundation and the Mainland Affairs Council recently estimated that only 20,000 Taiwanese compatriots will return to Taiwan from the mainland this year, which is less than one-third of previous years, and the number may drop.

Chen Zhebin, secretary general of the Beijing Association of Taiwanese Enterprises, told the China News Agency that at present, both sides of the strait have a longer period of epidemic prevention and isolation for immigrants, and the time and economic cost of returning to Taiwan for the New Year are both high. According to his understanding, more than 80% of the association members Both decided to stay in Beijing for the New Year.

He said: "We are willing to actively cooperate with the mainland's epidemic prevention work, because these measures can ensure our safety. The association's original planned Spring Festival group activities have been cancelled, and everyone will greet relatives and friends through video."

Xue Yingxu, a young Taiwanese director in Wuhan, witnessed the lockdown of Wuhan and the fight against the epidemic during the Spring Festival last year. He shot many videos to clarify to Taiwan relatives and friends that certain media on the island had discredited the mainland's fight against the epidemic.

Now, walking among the bustling crowds of Chuhe Han Street, he told reporters of China News Agency through video, “Wuhan is full of life now, and it can be said to be the safest place in the world. This is in line with the bravery and strength of the people of Wuhan and the support of the whole country. They are inseparable. I hope that after the epidemic has eased, Taiwanese friends will come to see the real situation on the mainland with their own eyes, instead of hearsay."

Xue Yingxu still decided to stay in Wuhan for the New Year this year. He said that he missed his family in Taiwan very much and often video calls with them; he will not be idle while staying in Wuhan to celebrate the New Year. His new movie is being planned, and a lot of work is being done in full swing.

Gao Shuoheng, a young man from New Taipei City, Taiwan who works in Haicang District, Xiamen, will also stay on the mainland during the Spring Festival.

He plans to accompany his girlfriend back to her hometown in Fuzhou for a special reunion year, and is full of expectations.

Gao Shuoheng said, "In 2020, I participated in the poverty alleviation work on the mainland, and I also saw the achievements of development and construction in various places. I hope to develop better in 2021. As long as we follow in the footsteps of the country, we will definitely be able to overcome the epidemic."

Beijing Taiqing Huang Boxiang returned to Beijing from Taiwan on February 3 last year and stayed at work. He also initiated fundraising with many Taiwanese youth partners to support the mainland's fight against the epidemic.

This year he will stay in Beijing for the first time this year.

Huang Boxiang believes that 2021 is a year full of hope.

"In the first year of the '14th Five-Year Plan', the mainland is building a new dual-cycle development pattern. In addition, the launch and vaccination of vaccines will play a positive role in the prevention and control of the epidemic. Taiqing will also have more development opportunities in the mainland."
