A decree signed by Joe Biden on his first day in office is particularly pleased in Mexico City.

The Mexican government on Wednesday welcomed the suspension of the construction of a wall on its border with the United States by the new American president as well as his migration reform project.

This “anti-migrant” wall was a flagship promise of Donald Trump, made during his presidential campaign in 2016.

"Mexico welcomes the end of the construction of the wall," tweeted Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

The latter also welcomed the migration reform project, welcoming in particular "a path towards dual citizenship".

“As President López Obrador wrote a few years ago to now President Joe Biden, bridges pave the way for cooperation and understanding,” he added.

The Democratic president therefore signed a decree on Wednesday ordering the end of the construction of the wall.

He will also present to Congress a migratory reform project, which will notably make it possible to regularize the situation of some 700,000 “Dreamers”, these young adults who entered the United States illegally in their childhood and who have lived there ever since.

A program, called DACA and intended to protect these people from deportation, was put in place under the Obama presidency.

But Donald Trump, who had made the fight against illegal immigration one of the markers of his presidency, canceled it in 2017.

The sensitive issue of migration

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Wednesday that he shared the priorities set by Joe Biden for the start of his term in office, particularly on migration, a sensitive issue for Mexico in its relations with the United States.

He was, however, among the last to congratulate the new president after his electoral victory in November.

He had, it must be said, a close relationship with Donald Trump.
