The UAE approves raising the ceiling for its national contributions to climate action

Dr. Abdullah Al-Nuaimi: "The UAE's efforts to curb climate change come within the context of its efforts to diversify the economy and energy sources."

The UAE has submitted its second Nationally Determined Contributions to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which includes raising the ceiling for these contributions, including increasing emissions reduction efforts, promoting reliance on clean energy, and expanding carbon storage efforts, blue carbon projects, and sustainable agricultural and waste management systems.

The Council of Ministers approved the second nationally determined contributions in early December.

The contributions include the country's most prominent current and future plans and efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change and reduce its severity.

The Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al-Nuaimi, said that the UAE's efforts to curb climate change come in the context of its efforts to diversify the economy and diversify energy sources. For the sake of the climate, and supporting international efforts to confront the most important challenge facing the future of humanity and the planet, and keep pace with its trends by ensuring a better future for current and future generations.

The goal of reducing emissions in all economic sectors included in the nationally determined contributions of the UAE includes its ambition and commitment to continue reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, leading to a reduction of 23.5% from the business normal for 2030, which is equivalent to an absolute reduction of emissions by about 70 million tons, which represents This goal is an affirmation of the state's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement, as it is the best option for dealing with the problem of the implications of climate change and efforts to reduce and adapt to it.

In the goal of mitigating climate change, the state is committed, by raising the ceiling for nationally determined contributions, to develop and increase the share of domestic clean energy, to reach a production capacity of 14 gigawatts by 2030, compared to only 100 megawatts in 2015, and the capacity achieved so far of 2.4 gigawatts in 2020 The total volume of local investments in clean energy projects has reached 40 billion dollars so far.

It is also committed to continuing to apply an integrated system of measures aimed at reducing the level of emissions in the main economic sectors (energy, transport, industry, services, agriculture, and waste).

In this context, the UAE has created the first commercial network in the region to capture, use and store carbon, to enhance the deployment of this critical technology to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Under the goal of enhancing capabilities to adapt to the repercussions of climate change, the state is committed, within raising the ceiling of its nationally determined contributions, to continue efforts to preserve coastal ecosystems, and the blue carbon project by planting millions of trees, including mangroves, of which 30 million seedlings are planned to be planted by 2030.

The state is also committed to continuing the system of adopting sustainable and climate-smart agricultural systems, expanding efforts to reduce food waste levels, and promoting sustainable production and consumption behaviors.

The Paris Agreement

Under the terms of the Paris Climate Agreement, adopted in 2015, the NDCs were the framework that highlighted countries' efforts to reduce emissions at the local level and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Quantitative emission reduction targets emerged as a central part of the contributions submitted, with the focus on measuring progress in reaching the global average temperature set by the agreement.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 23.5% from business as usual for 2030.

Planting 30 million mangrove trees by 2030, boosting the coastal environment and blue carbon.
